Are you having an Anxiety Attack?

11/1/2023

Picture
Anxiety attacks can be extremely debilitating, and while many of those with panic disorders experience them often, it can happen to anyone. These episodes can be hard to pin down and understand, especially in a moment of stress. Understanding the symptoms and knowing what to look out for can be crucial in a time of need.

Physical symptoms of an anxiety attack can include:
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Rapid heartbeat

Psychological symptoms of an anxiety attack can include:
  • Derealization (loss of touch with reality)
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • “Disaster thinking”, involving uncontrollably imagining situations like car crashes or collapsing in a dangerous place (Abraham)

While there are no specific causes for anxiety attacks, they are understood to be a combination of biological vulnerabilities, ways of thinking, and environmental factors like social stressors (Edwards). Anxiety attacks can be caused by a stressful situation, receival of tragic news, or sometimes nothing at all. Keeping a pulse on your physical and emotional state can help you stay in control.

Condoms

5/17/2023

Let’s talk about gloving for loving!
Condoms, when used correctly, are 98% effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy. They are also extremely effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases.
Using them correctly means using a new condom for every act of penetrative sex, including putting it on correctly and removing it correctly (see below)!
I know, very few people actually *like* condoms. However, that’s often because we aren’t taught to use them correctly!

should you go alone

2/24/2023

There are plenty of ongoing, online conversations questioning whether or not you should attend a convention alone. Should You Go Alone? We say YES! Go and enjoy yourself. There is no denying there is safety in numbers, but there is nothing wrong with going to a convention alone. You should absolutely talk to strangers! Have fun! Make some new friends!
Picture
Road Trippin’
First of all, remember: If this is a “road trip” for you, know that your vehicle will make it there (and back). You know how we always say to break in your shoes before coming to con? You should also give your car, cat-bus, hovercraft, or Go-Go-Gadget copter the once-over about a week before the convention. Keep a break-down plan that doesn’t require you to have a charged phone battery.
But when you get there? You’re at con! Your job is to have fun, enjoy yourself, make new friends, and tell everyone you know about how awesome the con is. Generally speaking, conventions are very safe environments. They’re usually indoors, self-contained, with plenty of friendly staff and helpful folks.
Scheduled Check-Ins
If you’re part of a group but choose to split off and do your own thing, it does make some sense to have regular check-ins scheduled with your group. Maybe it’s a simple phone call. Maybe it’s an agreement to check in at midnight or something. But for safety’s sake, this small measure remains a good idea.

Similarly, if you’ve come to the con solo, it makes some sense to have a periodic check-in with someone back home. A family member or a friend. You don’t like your family and you have no friends? Okay, how about a neighbor? Your neighbors are jerks? Alright then, a co-worker. You don’t work? Then how about your third grade math teacher?

There's an app for that.
Situational Awareness
At the con, a little situational awareness certainly helps. This can be hard at conventions, because as the Cheshire Cat once said, “We’re all a little bit mad here.” Each Fandom has its own quirks, so how do you know who is trouble? Trust your instincts. Exercise the same caution that you would if you were out at a bar. If a situation doesn’t feel right to you, politely excuse yourself and get to a safer place. Know how to recognize con staffers and where to get help. The UsagiMed station is always a “safe space” for everyone.

responsible drinking

We’re friends, right? I’m not going to tell you that there’s a good time to drink so much that you get sick. That’s always a bad idea. But the last place you want to over-do it with the cocktails is your convention. Not only do you miss an opportunity for fun, but it’s like you’re losing money on your hotel room and membership.
If you’re 21 or older, a drink or two can make an evening lots more enjoyable. But if you drink too much, you cross over into a land that suddenly isn’t any fun anymore: “the spins,” vomiting, hangovers, and the inability to remember that hilarious thing that happened last night. When you’re sharing close quarters with a bunch of your friends, vomiting creates many logistical problems that are highly unpleasant for everyone involved. No one wants to miss a minute of the con, but you risk losing an entire evening if you overdo it.
Con-time is our favorite time of the year. It’s Christmas for anime fans! We wait for it all year, like excited grade-school kids, counting down the days and hours. We plan elaborate costumes, complex packing strategies that are worthy of Tetris, book and fill hotel rooms to bursting, and buy our memberships. We want to pack the maximum fun into every minute we have, and make memories and tell stories for the rest of the year, until the con comes around again.
So pace yourself, have a great time, and send us a photo, OK?

bring your meds

2/24/2023

Take your prescribed medicine. Take it as prescribed, even at con. The laws of medicine still apply, even during the most fun weekend of the year. And don’t take anyone else’s medicine.

Many of our patients are folks who forget to take their medications. Some forget to take them on time. Others simply didn’t bring their meds to the con, or were having so much fun they didn’t think to take them all day.

con crud

2/24/2023

Con Crud. You don’t want it, and neither do we.
“Con Crud” (also known as “Con Plague”) is a broad term applied to any number of viruses or contagion you may pick up from others while you’re at a convention. The fact is, we all encounter all kinds of “crud” (germs, bacteria, and viruses) on a daily basis. Our bodies generally do an amazing job of fighting off these invaders every day. BUT, when you’re staying awake all night, gaming, partying, and reveling with your friends over meals comprised of pocky and red bull, your immune system taps out, and all the “crud” can have its nefarious way with you.

Ah, what price vanity? Your cosplay rocks, but that blister is a work of art unto itself. UMG can help you with the blister, but you’ll have a much better convention experience if you just wear sturdy, comfortable, walking shoes that you’ve already broken in.
